About Local Food

Qualla Berry Farm is part of a loose community of growers and marketers throughout western NC who are seeking to provide locally grown food to people who live and visit  the mountains. We are helping to develop ways to keep our rural land in agricultural production. We are listed in the Local Food Guide produced by the Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project. For more about U-Pick farms, tailgate markets, and community supported agriculture growers, see their website: www.buyappalachian.org

Ginger Harvest Begins at Qualla Berry Farm

Posted 10/20/2016 9:36pm by John Clarke & Karen Hurtubise.

Dear Friends,

It's Harvest Time! We have begun digging Fresh Ginger and we are taking orders for the 2016 season. The Fresh Turmeric harvest will begin around Halloween. Longer time spent in the ground allows for developing more of the orange color signaling the curcumin in the turmeric rhizomes.

New photos have been posted in our gallery as of October 18! Here is the big hoop house ready for harvest as of today:

We'll be harvesting Fresh Baby Ginger through October and November and Fresh Turmeric through November and December 2016. Both are still priced as they were last year, $16 per pound (check or cash). We have found that 5 pounds of each is our year's household supply for tea and for cooking.

Please join our mailing list to receive updates as the harvest progresses and for news about farm open houses, market appearances, and other events.

We invite you to a special Biodynamic Field Day afternoon on Saturday October 29th from 1:00 to 4:00pm with The Merry Prepstirs, Hugh Lovel and Shabari Bird of Quantum Agriculture fame. They will share with us how to use biodynamic soil preps and we will spread them on Qualla Berry Farm. They will share best soil practices for growing our turmeric and ginger and all garden crops. This is their gift to our community so come for free and enjoy a visit to Qualla Berry Farm to see what's growing in Autumn. Please RSVP to jkqualla@frontier.com if you are coming so we have enough buckets and supplies.

We look forward to hearing from you and are gearing up for harvest time and sharing these delicious and healing plant rhizomes with you!

There are links below to the order forms, our email address for RSVP of October 29th Merry Prepstirs Biodynamic Field Day, and a link to access our website. We continue to work and improve our communication and online skills.  Growing and harvesting crops has been first priority. We greatly appreciate your support and kindness.

Big Thanks,

John Clarke and Karen Hurtubise
